What is a QR code?

A QR (Quick Response) code is a two-dimensional barcode that stores information in a pattern of black and white squares. Unlike a traditional one-dimensional barcode, which can only hold a short string of numbers, a single QR code can encode hundreds of characters โ€” a web address, contact details, a WiFi password, or a block of plain text. When someone scans the code with a smartphone camera, the device instantly reads the stored data and performs the matching action, such as opening a website or joining a network.

QR codes were invented in 1994 for tracking automotive parts, but they have since become one of the most widely used bridges between the physical and digital worlds. You will find them on restaurant menus, product packaging, business cards, event tickets, real-estate signs, billboards, and packaging inserts. Because almost every modern phone can scan them with its built-in camera โ€” no app required โ€” they offer a frictionless way to turn anything printed into an interactive experience.

How QR codes work

Every QR code is built from a grid of small modules (the individual squares) arranged inside three large square markers in the corners. Those corner markers help a camera find and orient the code, even when it is tilted, partially obscured, or printed at an angle. The remaining modules encode the actual data plus error-correction information, which is what allows a QR code to keep working even when part of it is scratched, dirty, or covered by a logo.

When you generate a QR code, the tool translates your content into a standard format (for example, a URL becomes a string beginning with https://), then builds the grid pattern from that data. Scanning apps read the pattern, recognise the format, and trigger the right action automatically. This all happens instantly on the user's device โ€” there is no server involved in the scan itself, which is why the codes you create here never expire.

What you can create here

Our generator supports five common content types, all available without an account:

Website & Links

Direct scanners to any web page โ€” a homepage, product page, social profile, or app store listing.

WiFi Login

Share network credentials so guests can connect to WiFi without typing a password.

Email

Pre-fill an email with a recipient and subject so customers can reach you in one tap.

Phone Number

Let people call a number instantly โ€” ideal for support lines, bookings, and takeaways.

Plain Text

Encode any message, coupon code, or instruction that displays on screen when scanned.

Print & Digital

Download as PNG, SVG, or PDF and place your code on flyers, packaging, or screens.

Tips for scannable QR codes

A QR code is only useful if people can scan it reliably. These practical guidelines will keep your codes working across devices and print sizes:

  • โœ“Keep strong contrast โ€” a dark code on a light background scans best; avoid reversing the colours.
  • โœ“Leave a clear margin (the 'quiet zone') around the code so cameras can detect the corner markers.
  • โœ“Print at least 2 ร— 2 cm for close-up scanning, and larger for posters or signs people scan from a distance.
  • โœ“Test your printed code with a real phone before committing to a full print run.
  • โœ“Keep the destination mobile-friendly โ€” most scans happen on phones, so slow or desktop-only pages lose visitors.
  • โœ“Choose high error correction so the code keeps working even if part of it is covered by a logo or label.

Why use this QR code generator

This tool is built to be fast, private, and genuinely free. Your QR code is generated entirely in your browser โ€” your links and text never leave your device, so there is no account, no tracking of what you encode, and no watermark on the result. You can customise the foreground and background colours to match your brand, add a frame with a call to action, and download a high-resolution 800 ร— 800 px image in PNG, SVG, or PDF format suitable for both screen and print.

Beyond the generator, this site includes a library of in-depth guides covering QR code marketing, design, analytics, and industry-specific use cases โ€” from restaurants and retail to real estate and education. Visit the Guides section to learn how to turn a simple code into a measurable, results-driven campaign.
