A QR (Quick Response) code is a two-dimensional barcode that stores information in a pattern of black and white squares. Unlike a traditional one-dimensional barcode, which can only hold a short string of numbers, a single QR code can encode hundreds of characters — a web address, contact details, a WiFi password, or a block of plain text. When someone scans the code with a smartphone camera, the device instantly reads the stored data and performs the matching action, such as opening a website or joining a network.
QR codes were invented in 1994 for tracking automotive parts, but they have since become one of the most widely used bridges between the physical and digital worlds. Every QR code is built from a grid of small modules (the individual squares) arranged inside three large square markers in the corners. Those corner markers help a camera find and orient the code, even when it is tilted, partially obscured, or printed at an angle. The remaining modules encode the actual data plus error-correction information, which is what allows a QR code to keep working even when part of it is scratched, dirty, or covered by a logo.
